Combat
There's no attack button in Evolve a Cell. Damage happens when parts touch, and the dash turns a touch into a hit. Most fights are decided before they start — by size, speed and what's bolted to the front.
The basics
Contact is damage
Weapons hurt when they touch. Placement matters — a drill slightly off your front edge can miss entirely.Dash to hit
Space dashes. Bumping alone barely hurts; one player only got his zappers working after dashing into targets post-contact.No health bars
You can't see enemy health. Read size and parts instead. Bigger usually wins.Damage types and counters
| Source | How it hits | Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Bite (Jaws, Leech) | Front contact. Leech heals you. | Spikes and Thorn Skin hurt biters back. |
| Drill | Damage every tick while you push. | Membrane mutation halves drill damage. Don't let a drill pin you. |
| Tentacles | Automatic whips; some grab and pull. | Same membrane mutation; stay out of reach. |
| Horns / Ramming | Big hit on a dash. | Dodge the dash, hit back during the cooldown. |
| Zapper | Shocks on contact; needs a dash to land. | Don't touch them. Fight at range or leave. |
| Poison Sack | Clouds left behind you. | Don't chase through the haze. Big cells barely notice it. |
| Spikes | Passive damage to anything touching you. | Don't bite. Use tentacles or wait for them to move on. |
Winning fights you pick
- Pick smaller targets. “Bully the weak ones,” as one creator put it. It isn't noble, but it's how you grow.
- Hit from behind. Their weapons usually face forward. Several players went for the back of a target and won fights they'd otherwise lose.
- Dash in, dash out. Don't sit in contact with a spiky or electric cell. Hit and reset.
- Watch your mouth. If spikes or a drill cover it, you can kill but not eat.
- Leave when it turns. If you're losing health faster than they are, dash away. Ink Sack and Camo Skin make that easier.
Defensive stats
Shell, Hard Shell, Armor Plate and Bubble Shield all reduce or absorb damage. The membrane mutation that halves drill and tentacle damage is the single best defensive roll. Healing comes from Mending, Leech Mouth and the skill tree's healing nodes.
